Alaska Bound

The above photo is Alex and I in front of Mendenhall Glacier in 2002. We fell in love with Alaska, and swore we’d be back eventually. It is hands-down, still our favorite of the places we’ve visited so far.

My mother went to Alaska a couple years after we did. Shortly after her return, she decided she wanted to go back with her family in tow some day.

We’ve all been saving our pennies like crazy, and after a year of serious planning the family trip is just around the corner! This would not have been possible without the help of my mother, who generously contributed a nice chunk of the tab. Not to mention, it was her crazy idea in the first place. Thanks Mom!

I’m starting this blog with the sincere hope that I’ll be able to update it somewhat regularly during our adventure. But I’m not making any promises! Past experience has taught me that internet connections on a ship are slow and unreliable, plus Alex & I have double excursions planned for all ports but one. Worst case scenario, I’ll write a summary each day but not post them until we return.

I think I should mention that our A/V equipment has grossly evolved over the last eight years. Last time around all we took was a measly film point & shoot. For this trip, we’ll be toting my DSLR including a long lens, a digital point & shoot, and a small camcorder. Sounds like a lot, but it all fits nicely into my average sized camera backpack.

Words cannot express how thrilled I am to be heading back to Alaska and sharing the experience with my family! Hopefully I’ll be able to share some of it with you here, also.
